Internet Basics
If you already understand how the web works you may want to scan this
page because it is covering simple fundamentals of web sites. Don't
skip it completely though: unless you really are a web expert there's
liable to be some deetails you didn't already know.
The Parts Of A Web Site
There's more to a web site than just writing text and adding pictures.
You need three different components:
1. a web address. People have to know to type in www.something
to get to your site.
2. a web host. Your computer is hooked up to the web but it doesn't
have the ability to provide content for people to read. People can't
view your web site from on your computer, so you have to find a web
host--someone who has a computer with special software that makes
it a 'server' so that your web pages can be seen.
3. the web pages. All the stuff you read on the screen has to be programmed
in a language that internet server computers can read. Most commonly
that language is HTML (Hyper-text markup language).
Let's examine each of these components in detail
Web Address
Your web address, or your web domain is the name used to identify
your web site. There are two different options to look at here:
1. buy your own domain. There are many companies who sell domain names.
In reality you don't 'buy' a web domain. You actually lease it because
you have to pay an annual fee to 'own' it, and when the year comes
that you quit paying that fee the domain is no longer yours and somebody
else can 'buy' it. Many different companies sell domain names at a
wide range of prices--even though they are all selling the exact same
product. EscortX.net does offer web domain
names for sale at very reasonable prices.
When you purchase your domain name you will have to select a username
and a password that are your private access to control ownership of
the domain name. Make sure you don't lose these as it can be very
awkward to retrieve them. When buying the domain you have to input
your name and address as the owner. Keep in mind that this information
is listed in what is called the 'whois' directory which is a list
of who owns what domain, sort of like a public telephone book. If
you don't want your name and address to appear there you'll want to
pay the extra fee to have private registration.
2. use space on someone elses domain. Most commonly this is done as
a sub-domain, which is something like www.you.escortx.net. It can
also, more simply, be done as a sub-directory: www.escortx.net/you.
The advantage of this is that it is cheaper. However it usually comes
with many limits on features and space. Also since it isn't your domain
you aren't able to build your own 'brand' name very well or have a
truly professional appearance. For clients who desire EscortX.net
does offer sub-domains.
Web Host
You can get free web hosting from some very popular companies such
as Geocities, Homestead, and Lycos. However these companies have severe
limitations on number of times your site can be viewed in a day, will
delete your web site if they notice it has 'adult' content, and put
advertising on your page to pay for the service. That advertising
often includes much-hated pop-up ads. This prevents you from gaining
a professional reputation and their services are best used for things
like personal web pages.
Hiring a web host company is strongly advised. Something very important
is to read their terms of service. First because some have devious
requirements. This is a legal contract you are entering into, and
some of them have set traps to guarantee they have your money coming
in for quite a while! Just as important is to check if they allow
'adult' web sites. The vast majority do not, and many of those who
do charge very stiff fees for what they offer. EscortX.net
is pleased to offer adult-friendly web hosting at very reasonable
prices. Feel free to compare our rates to other services out there.
When you choose a web host and sign up for their service they will
first ask you to make sure that your domain is 'pointed' to their
server. What this does is inform computers around the world that when
anyone types in www.yoursite.com it is to get the information from
the web host you've chosen. The domain actually still remains at the
place you bought it, it is just 'pointed' at your web host. It is
important to remember that 'domains' and 'hosts' are two completely
different and unrelated functions, even though they are often provided
by the same company (such as EscortX.net). So when your web host gives
you your username and password for your web hosting, this is a completely
different username and password. Both should be saved and each treated
as important.
Here are a couple of definions for you:
| disk space |
how much room you are allowed
for storing your pictures and text and email (if your host offers
email service) |
| bandwidth |
how much data (pictures and text) you are
allowed have viewed each month. It is measured in 'K' (kilobytes)
of data traveling over the wires, and your allotment is generally
in 'MB' (megabytes, or 'thousands of kilobytes'). Every letter
is one 'K'. A small photograph will generally be about 30-50
K. |
| webmail |
email that you can send and receive right
on a web site. Examples are Yahoo! and Hotmail. Some web hosts
offer you your own webmail system included with your web site. |
| POP3 email |
email that you can download and upload from
your computer email program such as Outlook, Netscape Navigator,
Thunderbird, or Eudora. |
| mail forwarding |
the ability to redirect your email to a different
mail box. |
| URL forwarding |
the ability to have your web site set up
so that when people type in your web address they end up at
a different web site you've selected. |
| visitors |
the number of different people who visit
your web site. |
| hits |
the number of different items that are displayed
from your web site. If a person views your home web page with
text plus 5 graphic items that counts as 6 hits. |
Web pages
Once you have the web host, your site doesn't create itself and appear
by magic, of course. You have to get the pages built and then load
them up into the space your web host will have given you. To load
them into your web hosts computer you will most likely either use
an FTP program of FrontPage (Microsoft's web program).
If you know how to construct web pages you can do it all yourself,
otherwise you can hire someone. EscortX.net has done work for many
of our clients, or if you prefer to hire somebody else we will be
happy to work with them for uploading to our server should you choose
to host with us. |
