Setting Prices

Deciding how much to charge is a question that escorts never stop asking themselves (and each other!) The prices vary greatly from one city to the next, and depending on the appeal an escort generates in their local community they can be at the lower, middle, or high end of their local area scale. So how do you decide what to charge when you're first starting out?

Let's go over the different factors that can help narrow it down:
What is your competition charging? Grab a copy of the local gay newspaper and start calling escorts. Ask them what their hourly rate is. Google escort web sites. Go to www.google.com, type in 'gay escort [your-city-name]' and examine the prices on the guys web site (you'll notice that some of them may have chosen not even to list their prices). Take notes on prices from both your phone and web site searches. Beside each price write your opinion about how the guy came across in his web site or on the phone. Did he sound really good, and classy? Do the pictures on his web site show a guy to-die-for-hot, or only 'good looking'?

This will give you an idea of what the range is in your area. Now it's time to start determining where you should fit into it.
Get naked and stand in front of a full-length mirror. What do you see? Be brutally honest--goodness knows some of your clients will! Do you have a body Michelangelo's David would be jealous of? Are you in 'pretty good' shape, but not going to win the Playgirl-model-of-the-year contest? Do you have a bit of excess fat? As shallow as it may be, looks are very important in this business. That said, if you're a bear going after that market you need to use totally different criteria than that we've discussed so far, of course!

What are your sexual skills? Here you've got to be truly honest because trying to pretend you're good at something you're not really into sexually will damage you badly: clients know when a natural bottom is faking he's a top and they do not react kindly.

While there are great exceptions to every rule, generally speaking the broader your range of sexual taste the more valuable your services are. An escort who is comfortable in the full range from totally-vanilla-cuddly-soft'n'gentle sex to hard-core-severe-S&M-leather-daddy-fucking can command a high price.

So once you've taken the time to do your research and the self-analysis, where do you think you fit on the scale in your city?

Now let's take into account that you're new at the escorting business. No matter how skilled you are at sex, how suave you are in bed with guys, a new escort is a new escort. It does take a bit of time to build up the comfortable feel of an experienced escort, so Eros Rising recommends setting your starting price about 10-20% lower than where you believe your target price is.

And a great selling feature is to advertise it as an "Introductory Special". This both attracts guys to a 'sale' and lets them know that these low prices won't be available from you long-term.

Holding Your Price
Once you've set your price it's not an easy thing to change. Let's face it: escorts are an expensive commodity. Guys really notice it when the price on something expensive goes up even higher! And this is why while Eros Rising recommends offering 'cheaper' prices your first few months, but advertising them as an 'introductory special'. It ensures they are prepared to accept it when the prices go up a few months later.

No matter where you set your prices you will be contacted by guys who want to bargain with you on your price. Eros Rising strongly recommends against ever doing so. Once you start the practice of bargaining it's almost impossible to ever get out of it without losing the clients. So be firm on your price--politely tell guys that you do not bargain. Most of them will accept it graciously, and the few who still nag at you about it are, according to experience, usually the more difficult clients who you'd like to charge more!

If you should come to the conclusion that you're not getting business simply because you set your price a bit too high and really do need to come down, then do so: but you still are not 'bargaining' with clients. You just lowered your price, plain and simple. Tell them it was because the market is depressed, to be nice to your clients, or whatever sensible reason you think sounds best.

Raising your price? Once you've been in business for a longer term, you may feel that you didn't set your price high enough. Raising of prices is handled in two different ways by escorts. Some will let their regular clients know that the prices are going up but tell them that as a courtesy to them they will be able to pay the 'old' price for X number of extra months. Some will tell regular clients that as a long-term client they are locked in at the old price even though all new clients are going to be paying a higher rate. The latter option generally builds more solid relationships with clients and often ends up with tips that more than make up for the discount being given.

Tips
Many escorts say it is common to get tips from clients, but never expect it to happen. First, a tip should never under any circumstances be considered required: tips are thank-you gifts. Note the word 'gift'. A gift is something given by free will. Second, because the price for hiring an escort is rather high some guys will simply consider that the fee paid is already ample and adding a tip would just be overdoing it. Or maybe they really had to budget to afford your rate and adding a tip is just over the top for their funds. Third, tipping is a cultural issue. In the United States tipping is very common. In other parts of the world it is less common to varying degrees depending on the country. So people from some cultures may never even consider tipping simply because it's something they are not accustomed to.

Extra Fees and Other Prices
Don't forget when you set your hourly price that you do need to consider some other prices as well. Do you charge an additional fee to make outcalls to the suburbs in your area? That is commonly done by many escorts. Do you have a surcharge for certain activities? It is fairly uncommon except by guys who have play rooms or extensive sex attire. Then it is considered reasonable due to the cost of maintaining the play room and wardrobe. Do you offer an 'overnight' price? Do you offer a discount for multiple-hour service? Do you offer a 'weekend' price? What will you quote a guy should you suddenly get asked to come visit him for 5 days?
